Why We PRINT

As I was driving home the other day one of my favorite Charlie Robinson’s songs came on my playlist. Photograph. It’s a song that speaks to me on several different levels but one of the main things he speaks about throughout the song is looking at old family photographs.

“Well, I got a picture
It's glued in a book
Of most of my family
That somebody took

Well, grandpa died early
Before I could know
The man that they tell me
I take after so

Well, I don't remember
It still makes me laugh
When I see us together
In a photograph”

Charlie’s song got me thinking about photographs from my family’s past. I am very fortunate to have had ancestors who valued photography and therefore printing of those photographs and memories. I have photographs that date as far back as my great, great grandparents and to the turn of the century. Pictures of my mother’s father as a toddler, my dad’s mother as a beautiful young college student, weddings, births, even of my great grandfather’s pharmacy from the 20’s. As seen above is a picture of my grandfather that I never met, in Hawaii, in front of his plane during World War II, who at least at that age in looks “I take after so.” These pictures taken by family, friends, and unknown photographers allow me to see and understand so many things that I would never otherwise be able to see.

While many of us have these sort of photos of family and friends, our descendants will not have them of us.   Even thought we take thousands of photos, they live on our phones, on our computers, on our social media. What is the likely-hood of our family's having those when we are gone? Will they be able to find them?

As a photographer, I have the unique ability captured weddings, families and moments in time for my clients. Moments that are preserved in print form. Moments that I know 100 years from know may provide some of the same history and sense of pride and belonging.

Capturing History is a very important reason as to why I take photographs. Time changes all things, some rapidly and some over extend periods of time. Sometimes because of the age of something, the history can become obscured and even lost over time.
